I was talking with a friend on another thread about Pre. Here's a poster I bought. I thought my fellow LRCers who are Pre fans might want to grab these up:

Who was I talking to? Sciatica Road. You BETTER not be asking who Pre was, or I'm gonna be like the Sandlot crew when Smalls didn't know who Babe Ruth was!

Yes, but it isn't a cheap paper poster that's going to start tearing at the edges. Read the description. It was worth it to me.
What is special about this poster is you can
"Hang the poster on a wall, door, ceiling tile or any other place."
The dumbest Pre quote of all time. And sort of ironic that the poster depicts the 1973 NCAA Cross Champs where it was Nick Rose who took it out at a "suicide pace" and Pre sat back and let him built a big lead before reeling him in.
Dave Bedford actually tried that tactic in the 1972 Olympic 10k going out in 4:10 the first mile. In the 5000 at the same Olympics Pre sat back and they went through 2 miles at
13:56 pace, a time he ran faster in high school.
And complained afterwards about the slow pace the first two miles.
You're really a wet blanket, dude. Who cares about a particular race? While you're right that Pre didn't really run a Pre-style Olympic race, this poster quote is all about Pre's attitude and his reputation. Nick Rose was like Pre--both brutal front runners. When you have two guys like that in the same race, the prediction, in the words of Mr. T/Clubber Lang in Rocky III, is PAIN. Remember the 1980 IAAF World Cross Country Championship? Rose ran a suicide pace and paid for it later. Virgin won it in a kick. But you had to admire Rose for just laying it all out on the line, win or lose. That was Rose, and that was Pre. And it so often worked until runners like Miruts Yifter came along with their rocket kicks. Here's a video of Rose. Now go curl up with your wet blanket and watch it.

You really need to stop trolling, my friend. Try contributing something to the forum. You might find it refreshing. I know everyone would. Peace.
No doubt Pre was amazing and rare as a tough runner. The last mile in Munich, especially the last 600, grabbed me hard the first time I watched it 18 years later on VHS at a cross country camp.
I guess these days motivating high school runners to get inspired to run cross country requires cool t-shirs with inspirational quotes and if that works its all good.
Pre was also injured in that race- sciatica acting up- I've had it, it's horrible. He came back and won-amazing.
The haters on here are going to hijack and ruin any interesting discussion.

I show my runners these videos- they love Pre. He is still inspiring but so is Rupp and guys like that.
They talk about his workouts and records (Rupp) as well as Pre.
I think D F needs a hug.

Didn't he give that quote as he was finishing off his last beer and getting into his MG?
16 yrs before, a more accomplished runner said at the starting line of the Oly marathon "Men, today we die a little."

Sure, a more accomplished runner that dealt with MUCH less competition.

Ya think?
It's amazing. The dysfunctional crew here can turn a thread on orthotics into a nasty fest....

+1
... and considered by many to be one of the if not the best runner of his era. That's what most pundits choose to do - compare people to others of their contemporaries. His medals speak for themselves - as does Pre's. And I'm a Pre fan but not a worshiper.
