For about 2 weeks rent, you can buy a DECENT tent and sleeping bag and campstove. I'd camp up by Nederland along the peak to peak in the national forest-not in a campground but in dispersed areas. Supposedly, you can only camp in a single national forest for 14 days, but move around and keep your nose clean and the rangers won't notice you.
Run and sleep in the mountains-9000 feet or so. Speed work a couple times a week down in town-buy groceries and supplies and enjoy the Boulder vibe-such as it is.
The advantage of this approach is that when you figure out that Boulder ain't all that, you can move to a nicer part of the state.
I just saved you a couple grand of rent-which is quite a bit more than you'd make working at Alfalfa's or Mustard's Last Stand.
