For people who have done Nordic--either as cross training or competitively, was it a valuable use of time for running?

Extremely valuable. No impact, strengthens your whole body. Overall conditioning improving, setting up your cardiovascular system and pulmonary system for acception what running brings to the table.
Nordic skiing is an outstanding way to stay fit during the winter months (if there's snow). I've run some surprisingly good races (for me) off of 40 miles/week running supplemented by cross country skiing. I'm talking about near PR performances from 5 miles up to 1/2 marathon. Nordic skiing is actually more fun than running and I love to run.
