Hi, Sorry to make my first post a question, but I am in desperate need of some advice from those with experience with Achilles Tendonitis at the insertion...
5 months ago I started to feel tightness in my achilles, but it quickly progressed to being all day tightness. I went to a Doc, who sent me to PT for 4 weeks. Did all the stretching and exercises but it wasn't helping. Then I went to Podiatrist #1 who gave me 14 days of Diclofenac, which didnt work, then 14 days of some cream (didn't work). I was sent to Podiatrist #2 who gave me an MRI, Xray, and said I had severe tendonitis at the insertion with extreme inflammation. I had a Tenex Procedure 6 weeks ago, where they used a tool to burn off the degenerated portion of the tendon, plus all the damaged surrounding tissue. Generally the recovery is 4-6 weeks from this procedure, but I am now at the 6 week mark and still having tendonitis feeling.
The problem is that the tightness is so inconsistent. One morning wake up and feel pretty good, but an hour later I'm limping badly. Another day I wake up tight, then an hour later walking just about normal. This inconsistency has me so confused and upset. I am currently doing all of the PT exercises, rolling pin on my calves, eccentric calf exercises, lots of stretches, etc.
Is there something I am missing? I am 31 years old, originally injured the Achilles by doing a lot of calf exercises at the gym, and very good overall health. Should I just remain patient and eventually it will really go away, or do you think there is more to the problem?
One thing that throws me off, is that the Tenex says typical recovery is 4-6 weeks, but when I was in my 4 week follow-up the Doc asks "Can you run yet?" I said "No, I cant even walk full speed yet" He says to just be patient and I am doing fine. I feel like he might be not fully understanding my current progress and assumes it will just go away.
I am just unsure of how to handle the recovery process. I can walk at a slow speed, feel some tightness but not bad. Should I push it and walk a little faster, trying to walk through the tightness? How quickly should I expect to feel progress in general? Any advice is greatly appreciated, I am just so lost and hoping someone can give me some direction.
Thank you,
Chris
