Some blog put out an article comparing him to Mo Ahmed, seems like a hype machine to me. Anyone know if this kid is for real?

I think that he has a good chance to beat the Canadian indoor 3000m record (8:04) that has stood since 1979...
Took second at Penn Relays over 3000m last spring

Technically, Mo came into College with a 14:11 PB and then improved that to 14:02 in his freshman year.
Justyn is coming in with a 14:08...
14:08 is better than 14:11...so...
It's Mo's continuous improvement that has been impressive. Let's see how Justyn does. However, it seems to be starting well.
The major difference is that the Syracuse school record is only 7:59 at the 3000m distance. Their fastest runner is a 13:50 5000m type.... It's always easier to improve when your teammate(s) are very good... Justyn is missing strong teammates (funny that I say that, given that Syracuse won Adidas this weekend. They are certainly a very strong team overall, but they lack a superstar). I'm expecting Justyn to have a very good freshman year. What would be fabulous is for him to have continuous improvement over the next 4 years... Time will tell...
Justin went through 3k in 8.15 (13.45 5k pace), running with the Africans before blowing up, enroute to that 14.08 at World Juniors. I would not be surprised to see him take down the Canadian Jnr 5000m record (13.43 from 1962!! by Bruce Kidd) next year.
His 1.52 800m also indicates better real speed than Mo, and he has improved by leaps and bounds in just the last year, again after only a couple of years of training.

I obviously meant "Canadian JUNIOR indoor 3000m record..."

He certainly fell off the pace there, but I wouldn't say he blew up - the chase pack caught him but he was still able to outkick every single non-African.
Justyn goes to Syracuse. That is where Brad Miller went. I think he has a brother who runs the 800
Look at the kid now! He has run 3:39 and 13:34. I think it is pretty safe to say that the guy is a beast and probably quite a bit better than Mo Ahmed.

Quite a bit better than Mo Ahmed right now??
Mo finished 9th in the WORLD...you know against the best african competition at age 21 as a college junior, only 2 years older than Justyn is and ran his last 5k faster than knight's pr, in a championship not a perfect pace, perfect condition Payton Jordan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZgzeONUF7cJustyn Knight might not even be faster at the same age, as Mo Ahmed was 4th at World Juniors, Knight 8th or 9th?
Mo Ahmed finished 30th at NCAA XC as a true freshmen, Knight finished 143rd
Mo Ahmed finished 4th at NCAAs as true freshmen on the track the year Chelanga won, I doubt Justyn will finish higher (has to beat Cheserek, Jenkins, Cambell, has already lost to Joyce, etc)
The vote of confidence for Justyn is nice, but get some perspective
Yes but here's the thing this guy will probably end up being a better 5k runner just because he can run a faster 1500m than Mo. Plus he has done all of this on just a few years training and no more than 50mpw. I recall Mo Ahmed having run something like 70mpw in high school. He did come out of high school with a faster 5k time (14:08 to Mo's 14:11 and both of them were pushed in each race). As for the 10000m, well Justyn hasn't run one yet so we can't say anything.
They are different runners - Mo ran the 10000m in G11. Justyn has better speed and may well run a faster 5000 one day (Mo has run 13.18).
Hopefully this speed is also developed (1.52 800m in HS in a solo run, and probably hasn't run many) and I wouldn't even touch the 10k with JK if I were coach Fox. Leave that until after College if it is ever necessary.
Mo should start heading toward the Marathon, sooner rather than later. However I haven't been impressed with Jerry's marathon coaching (Simon Bairu anyone!!), so perhaps just staying with the 10k for a while, or even going to the roads, might be prudent.
This kind of speed can win championships in the NCAA.
A buddy of mine ran in the same highschool loop as him and said he came out of nowhere in grade 11 with some very impressive xc results and then started dominating grade 12 xc. I think he played basketball before that. so that's only about 3 years of running while many NCAA guys have been running since grade 9 and many did club in elementary school, I don't want to jinx anything but he could just be scratching the surface here, he has a lot more potential if you ask me

Funny that Knight also finished 9th at WC, beating the likes of Balew and Rutto.
I guess that they are pretty much at par in their respective progression at this point.
Again, time will tell if Knight's progression accelerates (or not).
Certainly nice to have them both on the Canadian team at the same time.
