I am a recently turned 14 year old freshman male XC runner. I want to know if I could ever make varsity or be know as fast, and how much effort it would take.
The county race was yesterday, and I ran a 19:41 5k with splits of 5:44 first mile, 6:29 second mile, and 7:28 last 1.11 miles(6:43 pace). The course was mostly flat. I ran a 20:47 5k last week and a 21:00 3 miler on a hilly course earlier that week. My first race of the season was around 24:00 minutes for a 5k.
I trained for 8 weeks, running 5 days a week, and about 25 miles or less a week. I did not train over the summer. I did run a mile race in middle school last year where I got 5:43, after spending the first 2 laps trying to hang on to the winner who got a 5:07.
I am thinking of doing indoor track, but would not do it if I have no chance of being fast. I like running, but would run for fun and less intense if I could not ever make varsity. I ask you because coach would tell me to do it no matter what.
I am the third fastest freshman on the team, and to make varsity on my team you usually have to be sub 17:00 minutes. Do I have a chance? How much training would I have to do? All seasons of track and summer running? In 4 years, at the end of senior year cross country how fast can I be?
Thank you for reading this. I appreciate any input.
