I have no reason to be beating someone like him, but I specifically train for obstacle course races so that was likely the difference.
Sure, it could be your specific training that gave you all of your edge over Austin Baillie. It could also be, at least in part, that his 1:04 half was almost five years ago and that he hasn't raced seriously in almost four years, and is simply not in the kind of shape he once was, and only entered the Warrior Dash because his wife did and was a contender for the win.
I did not realize he did not train competitively anymore and mainly only recognize his name from his impressive half-marathon a few years ago, so I stand corrected. Austin's running accomplishments destroy mine, so I figured he would still be in good shape today since he isn't old. My main point was to show that simply being a great runner doesn't necessarily mean you'd do well in an obstacle course run. Check out this physique comparison of the 6th place guy vs Max King (
https://m.facebook.com/H.McIntyre). There's no way Hunter would be able to hang on with an elite runner if this was strictly a running race, so clearly having muscle helps.
Also, I met Hobie Call before the race, and he does indeed come off as a little weird. However, the guy consistently places at the top of every race he enters. Sure, his weight vest idea is delusion, but he really is fast, especially at these types of races. Everyone seems to bash him on these forums, so you would think he is a terrible runner. I guarantee 99% of you wouldn't have finished within 2 minutes of him, though.
