Saw that they came 35th at Wisco, what happened? Thought they had a lot of talent.

They got a new coach
Men aren't as talented, but are even worse.
Wonder if any of those women want to leave Duke; they're young enough even if they were made to sit a year.
Seems that therir goal is to have a tight pack with no up front talent:
"Sophomore Haley Meier paced the Blue Devils by placing 146th with a 6K time of 21:39. Graduate student Jessie Rubin clocked nearly the same time as Haley, finishing in 149th with a time of 21:41. Sophomore Wesley Frazier broke the 22-minute mark after placing 180th and stopping the clock at 21:56. Junior Anima Banks and sophomore Hannah Meier rounded out Duke’s scoring five, placing 185th and 198th, respectively. Banks finished in a time of 22:00, while Hannah posted a time of 22:08"

This is Coach Engel's first year at Duke - hired in late summer/ early fall.
She will individualize their training in track and the future xc seasons, but for now they are running in groups.

perfect evidence as to why "spread" means jack sh*t!
I love Christine. She is a doll. I hope she is not married
Even still, whatever she's doing clearly isn't working. It seems weird to me that a school like Duke couldn't get a more experienced coach
pretty hard to judge a coach so early. christine seems good, give her a chance. Lots of these women sat out last year correct? who knows what's going on, obviously things aren't working now but we don't know the factors/reasons.
It's a shame because the Meier twins and Wesley Frazier were so talented in high school.
I don't think they want to leave Duke. I think they are probably having too much fun there.
Ok I've said this before but in cross country the Meier twins were not that great in High School. The fast one was solid and would consistently break 18 but the slower one was more often than not running 18:30s. They were and probably still are amazing studs on the track but this is Cross and they go 1K further also. Then my opinion on Fraizer is that it's just going to take time, however she got as insanely good as she was for that part of a year her senior year obviously hasn't lasted and she has to rebuild herself. I'm not saying anything bad about her either, could have just been over trained a bit. They will improve but I would doubt they will ever contend for anything. Too many people get caught up in these high school studs yet they aren't usually the ones dominating in college and beyond.
Probably tired of being marginalized by the sexist rape culture at Duke.
I disagree about Duke's HS studs---the Meier twins and Wesley Frazier.
They all ran incredibly their senior year of HS, especially Frazier and Hannah Meier.
Frazier won a triple at NBN in 4:39, 10:12 (full 2 mile), and 15:55.
Hannah finished just 0.35 behind Elise Cranny at '13's NBIN in the mile.
You don't lose all that talent in college....unless there is A)injury or illness, B) mental or emotional problems, or C) bad coaching!
I know Frazier got sick the fall of 13' after her first XC race.
But she's had a full year to recover, train hard, and return to the level she was at in HS.
She won her first XC meet this fall, running 14:01 for 4K against Florida State and Virginia.
Then she finishes a 6K close to 22 minutes, finished about 150th??
There's definitely something very wrong in Dukesville!!
Please explain all of the crazy Cross Country talent the Meier's had? Never even won an individual statetitle I don't think. (That is 100% not fair as there were insane studs in Michigan at the time)
But think of it this way, maybe the faster Meier and Frazier are under performing but Haley is actually doing well considering she was an 18:30 HS runner.
Hannah Meier
56 (400) 2:06 (800) 4:39 (1600) 17:16 (5K)
Hailey Meier
2:13 (800) 4:42 (1600) 17:54 (5K)
If they could run within ONE MINUTE of their HS best they would be competitive. But they can't do that currently.
Come on, those were their PRs. Which in track they were very consistent across the board and were huge studs.
Cross is another story, in HS it was clear they didn't care about XC as much as track, just the way it is nothing wrong with it, why would it be any different now. If they had wanted to be good at cross there were 2 in state schools they could have gone to that are doing pretty well right now.
Hannah's 17:16 came in a smoking fast regional course on a good day and her 17:34 at MIS was also one of the faster days in recent years
Haley broke 18 twice and her PR came when she was a sophomore on another faster day at MIS. Her senior year the same day her sister went 17:34 she ran 18:32, remember I said that was a fast day that year...
She did not break 18:40 that year many more times than she did.
Haley had mono her senior year of high school and you wonder why she didn't run as fast. Kid was lucky to have run at all!!
You are right, her junior year was much better 18:24 at State meet and 2 total times under 18:40 all year. Nothing against either of them, they are fantastic track athletes and I believe that is where their focus is. If they wanted to be insane XC runners in HS they would have ran the 3200 a little more too. There are a lot of D2 XC runnners with similar XC times to Haley. In XC that might just be the level they are, especially starting out in their first few years. Give them time to grow and get stronger and they will improve but don't just think because they have fast 800 and mile times they were going to come in an be all American right away.
They need skimpier bun huggers
