I went through the same thing--the same questions, and almost always around the two-mile point. I do not know how old you are or your background, but I can say that once I started running long regularly (once per week, ten miles or more), these questions would no longer crop up in short races (or in any races). Likewise, some VO2 work can help, too.
i have similar thoughts cross my mind. if i didn't, i'd think i'm not running hard enough and would pick up the pace. as to when in the race this should be happening, 2 miles sounds right. Bill Squires does mention in his book (Speed with Endurance) that the hard work in a race starts about 2/3 through.

who said the aim is for a race to "seem easy?" run 200 miles through the Sahara Desert, then the marathon would seem easy
I agree, Boss. There is a certain mental preparation that is important here, in addition to the fitness/discipline gained in longer runs.
Exactly it is an advantage to train have further than the goal race distance in order to make the race feel easier.

Yeah it's normal
Specificity with your training. Train your body and mind to 'run through' the discomfort that you face at the end of a race.
Even though you recover faster, in lot of ways a 5K is tougher than a marathon.

^ This doesn't apply. If you run a 5k competitively, it will still feel hard at 2 miles regardless of whether you have long run/marathon experience.
