When did tracks start being built in meters? In the 80s, the mile and 2 mile were raced. When did this change?

When your mom finally went black, never to come back.
In 1980 we were running on 400 meter tracks. Some were the old tracks with new lines drawn on them. So the switch happened at least by then.
Building or modifying to 400m instead of staying yards came with he arrival of allwearher tracks in the 1960s.
The College and state associations converted at various times along the path.

Correct. NCAA Nationals were run at 400 meters during Olympic years and I believe by the mid 70's most races started to convert to metric distances at the college level (to coincide with the world athletics, followed by high schools thereafter. New start lines were drawn initially until a new track was built and then they were built to metric specs, usually by having to put a new layer of asphalt around the turn so the smaller 400m could be marked properly.
Biggest mistake ever, in my opinion. Baseball went with the metric distance, but only had to deal with signs in the outfield. They quickly returned to feet within a few years. I think Montreal was the only major league baseball stadium that kept the metric markings for a longer period of time. When the government abandoned the idea of using metric measurements for everything (remember mileage markers became kilometer markers), only track and field stayed with the metrics. Instead we end up with a plethora of distance events, a mix and match hodgepodge that no one can follow easily(ie. 1500m, 1600m, mile). Field events are the worst. Quickly, without cheating, how far is 19.84 meters.....?? Ha, ha. Yea, that was an Olympic year....

Who gives a crap. Can you not run 1 meter more?
We still have a 440 yard track and still run the mile and 2 mile and 880 at our dual meets

What the hell kind of dumb question is that?
How much does an ounce of gold weigh?
I just wondered if there are any all-weather tracks were 440 and if there are any 400 meter dirt tracks.
I agree that the switch was stupid. We run road races in miles and track races in meters.
