So this might seem really stupid, but I'm a first year master's student, and I'm just very unhappy with my current life and especially the program I'm in. It's not at all how I thought it would be, and it's just not what I want to do. I've decided I want to leave the program and have a gameplan for what to do after I leave it. The problem is, it's only halfway through the semester. I don't really want to tell my adviser right now since they'll likely be angry, and I'll have to be around them the rest of the semester. Alternatively, they could just fire me, and I wouldn't get any credit for the classes I'm taking and lose my stipend (which isn't much but would be very helpful over the next two months). I'm not really sure what to do though because I have weekly meetings with my adviser, and he's wanting to see solid progress each week. I'm just not really sure when to break the news or how he's going to take it.
Anyone do this? What advice do you have? Should I tell my adviser now or keep my mouth shut another month?
