I've been having a hard time running very far lately. Right now, I'm running 4 or 5 miles in the morning and then 4 or 5 miles after work. How is this going to affect me?
This is not what I want, but I'm just curious if anyone ever did short doubles and got in good shape doing it?

We used to double even when only doing 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. It worked well. Running doubles allows you to run more mileage than in singles, and it also causes hormonal changes that get you in shape more quickly than if you ran singles.
I know of a 2.11 guy in the 70s who was running 2 x 30 min runs during the week but he did usually put in longer runs on the weekend. His 30 min lunch run was usually about 6 miles at 5 min pace. His afternoon run was usually a modest interval session of something like 12 x 400 at 70s.
Steve Magness blogged a while back about how he had guys doing 5 and 5 or 4 and 4 a lot when he was coaching at a local high school. The reason they did it was something about how they weren't allowed to leave school premises, but anyways I think it worked out alright.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with the East African country called Kenya, or sometimes Kenia, but running 40 min doubles or triples is very common there.I think they got in okay shape.
