I had a fight with my parents and I plan on cutting all ties with them, I don't want them to say they helped me in college at all. I'm on my moms insurance right now and she doesn't pay that much. I started looking for quotes and apparently for a guy in his early 20s I would have to pay close to 140 a month for car insurance. Wtf.

You want to cut all ties with the people who gave you life and provided food, clothes and, shelter for at least 18 years? What exactly was the horrible thing that they did?They wouldn't buy you a new iphone? Boy this generation will fail our country.

dump the two door and drive an older car. Get a 4 door honda civic from 2000 or something. cheap on gas and is so damn old that the insurance is cheap. you dont need comprehensive and only have liability.
$140/month would be cheap here in NY for a 21 yr. old & don't be biting the hands that have fed you all your life. You'll end up regretting it for sure.
I don't know how much it was worth as my mom still paid the insurance at the time, but when I was still in college I was able to get a discount for having good grades.
And of course like other posters have said, 4 doors, a cheaper car, and additionally the lack of a turbo charger (even if it's something non-sporty like a Ford ecoboost, it'll bump your rates) all help.
And keep a good driving record obviously too.
Other than that, not much you can do, and as other posters have also said, $140/mo isn't that outrageous for a young male, depending on where you live.
I had a good driving record and paid less than my buddies.
I still paid more than $140 per month 30 years ago.
Do you live in the middle of nowhere?
The further you live from the city, the less you will pay.
If it's a beater drop collision, comp, etc. Just keep liability and anything that pays out if you're at fault, or someone who is un-insured hits you..
Jack up deductibles..
..etc..
shop with a local independent agent who'll quote your coverage with at least 10 carriers. Don't be a sucker for the captive or direct carriers that spend $1B/year each on ads to convince you they're great, i.e. State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, etc.
The reason 21 year old guys pay so much is because they do stupid things.

There is NO doubt that you are correct and that your parents are wrong. So what. Not being able to get over it, quickly, is just the attitude that will get you into an accident on the road.

Tell them you are using your car only for pleasure use at 4000 miles per year. I worked at geico the past year, and the assumption that was made was that every driver was using their car to commute 5 days per week, and driven 12000 miles per year. Driving it for pleasure use ( ie not commuting) and less than 5000 miles per year are both things that could put you in a lower risk category. But as a 21 year old male, it will still be pretty expensive no matter what.
I paid $55 a month driving a fairly cheap used car (~$8000). Not that hard to do if you're willing to drop all coverage to near the minimums, just be aware that there's risk involved. If you've ever had reported accidents or tickets, you're looking at a higher bill regardless.
