you're a coach? you must be a terrible coach based on all the crap you post on LRC. i feel sorry for your athletes.
1k repeats with 2m rest are not a waste of time at all. they won't be a great predictor for a 5k performance but they can be a great aerobic stimulus in earlier training phases.

As a brit myself, I must say: you would be surprised how easy it is to get coach certification from UKA. IT MEANS NOTHING. One of the courses is about not raping your young runners. That is as technical as it gets...
5x1k is a good workout that lots of clubs will do because even the slowest folks will finish each rep under 5 minutes. 4x1 mile, despite being a somewhat better predictor, is not a good workout for a LOT of people. You have to be ~sub16 to be able to call it a good workout.
