Dude is doing 160+miles per weeks at 6:00min pace. Holy crap. He is either going to break in half or run very fast. Impressive work.

Interesting fact is that he reduced the carbs in his diet significantly and does his long runs without fueling carbs. Wants to become more efficient at fat burning.

Yeah, I think he aims at a 2:10h First time marathon. I know him in person, he is a very intelligent and focused guy. He finished medical school while still competing at the top. If you need a translation, I can do that.

I think he posted on his Facebook that he aims for 2:12. I looked up his Half time for the NYC Half and that would correspond to a 2:11. So considering this will be his first Marathon, I'd call that quite ambitious.

A 2:11 would put him in the all time top 10 of German runners btw.

Maybe not so ambitious. Gabius ran 1:02:09 for the NYC half, and that race had a slow start. Viktor Rothlin's PB is 1:02:16 for the half and he ran 2:07:23 for the full marathon!

It wasn't Viktor's first marathon, but still..

2:12 or better shouldn't be that crazy of a target for Gabius.

Maybe it's just me - but does really Canova coach this guy? There aren't many specific workouts... Or did I miss something?

Very interesting, though. He seems to be really fast in the shorter stuff!

My only observation is that there is not much variation in his training paces. That can be an indication that he is attempting to adjust from a world-class 3000-5000m runner to a marathoner.

Also, he should start to eliminate this short racing (6km?) from the schedule as he gets closer to the goal race.

It looks like a base-phase 4 months before the goal marathon, quite a stupid training, the opposite of a Canova-like preparation

Yeah.. and what about Kimetto and other `turbo diesel' Kenyans, resp. their training? If they trained like Gabius they would be running sub 2hr marathons like nothing

They already train a lot more than Gabius...and have more desire. Gabius would easily be at 2:02-2:03 if he trained like them.

Today, he ran a 28:08 10k Street Race. Only 21 seconds off the german record.

2:09:32 today in Frankfurt. Fastest German debut EVER.

5 times 3 miles @ 4:50 to 4:55 pace

How is that not on the way to being specific?

Not only that, but the "stupid training" got him a 2:09 debut, faster than predicted from a 1:02 half.
