What she doesn't say is that it was reading the LR message board where her nightmares became reality and drove her to "rage, sexual frustration, cigarettes, and wine to train for her first marathon".
Sounds like the typical marathoner training wise. Yawn.
self-important urbanite runs marathon, thinks everyone want to hear how special she is. yawn.

It's a nominee for the most New York Times story ever.
Does anyone else feel bad for the husband? Guys going to Iraq, and 2004 was a really bad year as I remember, and she's angry at how lonely that makes her?
Thanks for posting, that was an interesting story. I've never read a race report like that before.

Yea I got that part, but it seemed like she was angry directly at him for having that job and blaming him for doing it.
I don't understand why this is worth of an article. She's representative of the thousands of people who don't train and then ran bad marathons. There's nothing admirable about that. Reminds of me of the 4:02 guy at work who sent out an email to the running mailing list about how he only ran a few times a week and managed to run a 4:02, therefore conventional marathon training is inefficient. Gave me a good laugh but that's about it.

He went to Iraq as a NYTimes reporter.... If he was combat, yet. A reporter? No.

LOL! I thought it said "wank in the park"!
JAJAJAJA
Um, what was the point of the article?
That you can run approximately 11 min miles for a marathon (just a bit faster than a fast walk) if you train sporadically (actually, several days a week, but sans long runs) and still smoke occasionally?
Ok. If you had asked me before reading this if that would be possible, I am pretty sure I would say "certainly", what's the big deal? But, thanks to this article, I now know for sure that it's possible!
Thanks for sharing, frustrated lady, NYTIMES, and LETSRUN! One's dreams really DO become reality! (if your dreams are of an easy-to-reach nature)

Prague was mentioned 7 times, cigarette 8 times, and wine 5 times.
I think the point was to say that she lived in Prague, smoked cigarettes, drank wine and was very urbane and wonderful. Also she ran a marathon.

I never ran anywhere near that mileage. I ran 2:40 off of an average of 85 to 90 on a daniel's plan. I don't think that makes or entitles me to anything.
