The purpose for creating this thread is to promote a constructive discussion about training. The reason I use letsrun, is to search for training details, insights, or anything I can apply that will make me a faster runner. That is the point of training? To run faster?
So, what I basically hope to accomplish from this thread is a discussion about the biggest CONTROLLABLE factors that will contribute to one's improvement as a distance runner. It is important that these factors be controllable. I am not arguing that genetics don't play a factor, but those are not controllable, and dwelling on the hand you were dealt is not going to make you faster, only slower as your prime yourself with the belief that you can only be as fast as your DNA dictates. One of the most exiting things about distance running is how fast you will be is truly a mystery.
So to begin the discussion... What are the largest controllable factors that will contribute to your success on the track, trails, and road? What should a runner consider as essential elements to a training plan that maximizes their potential? How much of an impact can one's weight have on their aerobic capacity? How beneficial can a strength training program be for one's performance.
This is the sort of questions I want to provoke on this thread. Hopefully it will grow large a become a useful resource towards runners who are seeking improvement. Those speaking from experience, please offer your advice, and firsthand experience from what you may have learned.
