Apple was very clever in locking people into devices. The web services are a huge part of the stickiness of users. These same users are perfectly willing to sacrafice privacy and control for convenience.
If you really cared about how your phone worked and security, you would buy an android type phone which allows you to remove the battery i.e. not Nexus, and root it. 99.5% of smartphone users will never do this, so this is really a moot point.
I find Amazon music to be more than adequate. They are aware of my consumption habits, but I always use a VPN on my computer and phone, so they at least do not know where I am, etc.
We better hope the Chinese government never makes a $1trn bid for GOOG. All of our safety would be at stake were that to occur.
