According to junior's calculator, a 2:03 marathon equates to a 3:43 mile, surely kimetto can't run a me that quick.

Green Jacket, Gold Jacket, who gives a sh*t.
You mean you don't trust a calculator? That's silly. I checked myself to see what he can run right now:
1500 m. . . . 3:25.9
1 mile. . . . 3:42.2
3000 m. . . . 7:19.9
2 miles . . . 7:55.3
5K. . . . . . 12:48.0
10K . . . . . 26:41.1
20K . . . . . 55:25.6
Half marathon 58:40.1
I don't see why he would have any trouble running any of these times.
It's aerobically equivalent based on Daniels. Daniels is good, but here's what you need to keep in mind:
1. Kimetto will never run a 3:43.
2. That number is based on being in similar aerobic shape but focused specifically on the mile rather than the marathon.
3. It's not possible to simultaneously be in top shape for the mile and the marathon.
4. The mile and marathon use complete different energy systems, so training to get really good at one is ultimately going to prevent you from ever getting as good as you might've in the other.
5. It's possible that Kimetto is enough of a freak that he could've made it to 3:43 in the mile if he purely focused on it, but we'll never know.
6. If the story about his background is genuine and he truly only has been running for a few years, he's almost certainly the most talented guy in the history of distance running, so who knows what he's capable of...
Oh, and one other thing... the mile is on the bleeding edge of what those sorts of calculators are capable of predicting, especially based on a marathon performance, so it's probably still not even that accurate based on aerobic capability.

+1. This is so stupid it's numbing.
Daniels is also an idiot sometimes. He is quoted in the latest Running Times as saying that being bad on the track usually means you will not be a good marathoner. In the same article he then says that Americans don't start young enough in the marathon.
