What are D1 schools that are big on alumni?

What school has had a football team perform well for 20 straight years? That seems like it might be hard to find. Teams usually have both up and down years. My first guess would be to go somewhere in the SEC. Plenty of big schools with currently great football teams and proud alumni.

Haha okay, I might have exaggerated a bit there. But I guess by that I meant some place that I will care about how they are doing. Not some place that is consistently performing low that no one cares about. And thanks. I'll research those schools.

Take this as a piece of advice from a professor.

You'll hopefully realize this a few years from now on your own, but choosing a school based on its football team is one of the most poorly thought out decisions you could possibly make.

Day in and day out right now, you can find news articles about college debt, college graduates unable to find jobs, college graduates underemployed, etc. This is precisely why.

The vast majority of college students are effectively using college as a 4-6 year vacation paid for by their parents. They don't put any thought into what they're planning to do after college, and don't put any thought into what they actually hope to get out of college. Most of them don't even belong in a higher-education environment to begin with, and some of them have the necessary intellect, but squander it because they are completely clueless on how to take advantage of the opportunities given to them.

Do not become one of those people.

If I were in your place, the first thing I would do is to go to a career counselor and find the following pieces of information:

~Whether your family's finances allow for an out-of-state education or not, since an in-state tuition is typically much lower.

~Whether your family's finances allow for you to attend a private school over a public school.

~What your academic interests are, and which schools have programs that could match them. For instance, let's say hypothetically that you have an interest in marine biology. A huge number of large D-I schools do not even have a department in the subject. This includes the University of Michigan, Michigan State, UIUC, etc. Notice, these schools have plenty of proud alumni, commendable academic recognition, and decent athletic teams, but if you choose any of them, you won't even be able to study the topic that interests you the most.

Once you figure out these two pieces of information, your choices should be narrowed.

* Don't care about tuition

* Don't care about location

* Would like to keep up with a football team

* Not worried about sports

* Not worried about academics

* Would like a good football team

Any school that's on all three list would be what you're looking for.

If you want a good team then you're talking about the SEC. Start looking there. You could run at LSU, but being a distance runner at LSU sounds terrible to me.

Florida might not be too bad, granted the weather is not great for a runner, but U of F has a high HIGH babe factor.

You have described Big 10 schools. Their football teams actually suck, but they only play each other so no one cares. Great alumni experiences, and pretty good academics for schools with big time football (See: SEC).

And to that "professor" who was insulting your priorities:

There is more to college than getting a job. A proper college experience is invaluable and irreplaceable. From a financial standpoint there's no reason not to go to Community College then transfer to a state school. But then you risk missing out on tremendous opportunities for personal growth and end up bragging about being a junior college professor on a seedy message board.
