That's the world record marathon speed. Yes, it has now dipped under 70 seconds per lap.

that's a good observation, the WR just dipped under 70 seconds per 400m pace for the first time (although Mutai's wind-aided time in Boston was already there).
this is kind of insane to wrap my head around
I thought the pace was 4:41 - which would not be sub 70 per lap
I think there's a metric v imperial thingy going on here.

Correct. 4:41/mile equates to 69.9 for 400m.
I ran an 800 meters at this pace the other day and I was pretty proud of myself. Kinda nuts that some guy can run that for 26 miles.

Don't forget the .2. Anybody can do that for 26 miles, its the .2 that gets you.

I can't run one lap at that pace.
See sub 3 can't touch 70 thread.

I went yesterday evening to try, but someone was walking their dog in lane 1 and their kid was riding a bike with training wheels in lane 2, so I went home.
hahaha
Isn't that what pepper spray is for? There's a thread about this somewhere...
I seem to remember the verdict being a collapsible baton or small caliber pistol was the way to go. Or am I confusing this with another thread?

Don't forget the doping. Anyone can do that for 26.201875745645430684800763540921 miles plus 0.1% mismeasurement- it's the not doping that gets you.
This means that for at least 800 meters or so they were going pretty slow. I woulda been way ahead.
Good thing they went faster over the full distance or they wouldn't have got near the record.
Looks like another argument to go metric. But wait a minute.Isn't the "exact" marathon distance 26 miles 385 yds?In other words, exactly 26.21875 miles? This makes the marathon distance exactly 42.194988 kmNo rounding errors yet.The popular metric approximation of 42.195 km is exactly 12mm too long.12 mm is approximately -- rounded to 1000 significant digits:0.007456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818659031257456454306848007635409210212359818 miles.
