I'm currently employed, but I'm in a dead-end job. There is really no potential for growth or promotion in this company. For the last 2 months I've been actively seeking out new career opportunities. However, the biggest problem that I'm facing is that my skills/experience have seemingly pigeon-holed me into my current industry.
I'm having trouble getting consideration for other jobs because I lack the qualifications. I've also found that applying through job boards (Monster, Career Builder, etc.) are a complete waste of time. The vast majority of employment is secured through some type of connection, referral or internal contact. Accordingly, I've been focusing my energy on networking and establishing relationships with current employees (or people who know current employees).
I'm anxious to find a new job, but I understand that it's a process and will require some patience (especially with my circumstances). I was curious about how long the average job search takes. I read an article that said as a rule of thumb it takes 1 month of searching for every $10k you're hoping to make in the new position.
I'm looking for some feedback from you....
1) How long did you spend in your last job search.
2) What were some effective job search strategies that you used?
3) How did you secure your current position? (i.e. Applying blindly online, or through a connection)
4) Advice for securing employment when underqualified.
