Out of curiosity, where did you see the baseball ratings? I see that the overnight ratings for TNF were 4.5 rating (for 18-49) and 12.5 million viewers which was an increase over last weeks' TNF which had a 3.3 overnight rating (for 18-49) and 9.24 million viewers.
Not doubting you but I only found the network ratings not any cable ratings.
If you are saying they lost to the series premier of How to Get Away With Murder and edged out the Season premier of Scandal, you have to realize that premiers will normally do well and then settle in. Remember that TNF did much better viewershipwise than the week before when it was not going against any premieres so CBS was likely happy with the viewership.
Don't forget to add the ratings of CBS and the NFL network.

I think that CBS has full rights to the games and they are not being shown on NFL network anymore (could be wrong but I am pretty sure this is true starting this year)

Even if this is true, which I don't believe it is, TNF is the opposite of football's biggest stage.
