Anyone know the times it takes to run for McGill? Are they good with walk-ons?
I am an American without a clue about anything Canadian. I am just looking for great academics/affordable schools and McGill sounds like a great option.

Yes, pretty much anyone can walk on (as long as you do the training and so on). At least that's how it was in my day, and I don't think it has changed. If you're a 4:30ish miler in HS and continue to develop, you'll likely be a scorer on their team. But you don't need to be that fast to run for them.

How much French do you need to know to go to McGill?

Little to none for McGill. English is the primary language for the university. In fact, if English isn't your native language, you have to demonstrate English language proficiency.
You can also get by with speaking mostly English in Montreal, although it wouldn't be bad to learn some French.
Live in Quebec and obtain resident status before going to McGill. Research tuition prices that Quebec residents pay and you will understand. Yes. McGill is a very good school. You will enjoy the school and Montreal.
Have to be Canadian though and a Quebec resident to get the low tuition rate. For example an engineering student with CDN citizenship and Quebec residency pays $2700+/-, a CDN citizen without Quebec residency pays $6000 +/-, and an International student pays $28000 +/-
Still may be worth it. McGill is a great school.
Curious, why McGill?
Slightly more expensive than a state school here in the US
McGill has always been a great University. I lived in the Town of Mount Royal for a year in 1946. I ran cross country for the University of Western Ontario in the 1950s. We ran against McGill.
What's the difference between the McGill team and the McGill Olympic Club?

one is a club team. one is not. guess which
On the website, they seem more or less the same. Sometimes people on the club run for the school?
A not sarcastic answer would be helpful.
Engineering and science are more expensive than other disciplines. Check their website. I believe it's 18000 for arts undergrads.
I strongly recommend McGill. It's an excellent school and a fun city. The track team was a great experience for me (1:58 / 800m, 4:01 / 1500m in HS). I continued to improve and was on the team and competitive in Quebec but never really broke through at the Canadian national level. I've got lifelong friends and some amazing memories out of it.
The girls' team is usually stronger and deeper than the guys' probably due to academic standards.
Montreal is very relaxed in terms of partying and rules. Also given that it's a bit of an English island surrounded by French locals there aren't many commuters like you would see at other city based universities. Students tend to come from fairly far away and are more invested in the process. IMO it makes for a more intense but more rewarding four years.
What are the standards for getting on the team?
Could a 440/1000 (16/32) type get on the team?
Also, what do you guys do in the winter, when it gets below 0 F? Do you just run inside?
bump
You'd probably be better off emailing the coach than asking people on letsrun.
i have a friend who ran for mcgill and he said that the coach sucks. He was on the team for 3 yrs and then quit because of the coach.
One instance is that during xc beginning of the season, he made the team do fast 200m intervals on the track.
But then mcgill is a very good school.
