I'm conducting research for a magazine feature on exercise-induced arrhythmias.
I have been experiencing an arrhythmia during running where my heart beats at above max, 185-220bpm, sometimes for several minutes (with no other effects). I have had ECG, exercise ECG, and ultrasound tests, but with no firm diagnosis.
Has anyone else experienced similar (or otherwise) heart rate issues provoked by running?

Dysrhythmia is what you are describing. Technically, arrhythmia means you have no rhythm and is often used incorrectly, like many words in medicine and on this forum.
A very interesting subject! I wonder if this ties in with the fact that so many long term hard trainers and marathon runners had/have atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter. It appears that more older marathon and ex marathon runners have heart irregularities than don't. (A few years ago I had a cardio version.) And yet what has killed off most is cancer in their late 70s and older.
You should first eliminate one obvious factor in your diagnosis. Heart rate monitors are notoriously inaccurate at the beginning of exercise, especially if your skin is dry underneath the monitor strap. Be sure that you wet the skin, and also check your HR by counting the beats manually before deciding that the monitor is correct. The monitor might simply be double counting the beats.
I've experienced something but I can't really say what it is because that cardiologist that tried to check in out by putting me on a treadmill with a bunch of stuff stuck to me couldn't replicate an episode. I don't necessarily have to be exercising but it usually happens when I'm exercising. Usually it happens if I do a sudden movement or take a deep breath. It's weird but it's usually worse when I'm exercising. The first time it happened was on a tempo run and it gave me booty lock and my chest and neck got really tight and uncomfortable and I had to stop less than 5min into my 24min run. I also endured it for a 2mile race because I got it to act up at the starting line by taking a deep breath after warming up. It can jump up over 200bpm easily and can be over 220bpm if I can remember. I've had some people feel my pulse if they were nearby when it's happened and it's tripped them out. One suggestion I've gotten from someone is that it could be supraventricular tachycardia. To this day I still don't know what it is. I can have it act up several times a week or not experience it for months.
