I am looking for advice on how to train during my "off season", or winter. I just finished my last race for the year and want to continue training over the winter for next season, but am not sure what that training should be. The obvious answer is base building, however my last race was an ultra and I basically trained for it by base building. So further base building all winter is not appealing.
Can I work on stamina or even speed phases over the next six months? Or is it always better to just base build?
For reference, 35 years old, running for about 10 years, ran about 50 miles per week last winter, peaked at around 85 miles per week over the summer. I will probably run a 10 k in spring, a marathon in early summer and a couple ultras in late summer. My goal is to pr in all of them.
How best to use this winter?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
