Started 5 years ago, I was 27 (male). Improved quickly, sub 20 5k within a year, sub 40 10k within 2 years (current PR high 38s in 2013) and a relatively decent 1:26 half last year.
Over the 7000 miles I ran in past 5 years I focused on marathon training, as I struggled with the distance and training. I finally ran 3:17, which I am happy with for now (I know it's not great given other PRs).
Thing is, I CANNOT BREAK 19 in the 5k. It seems like all the miles and training made me strong at running anything 6:40 to 7:30 for long periods of time, but nothing faster than 6:15.
Did some speedwork over the summer and 800s at 6:00 is incredibly painful. For 400s all out, I don't think I could break 80 seconds. My body litteraly has no clue how to run faster than 6:00. My mile PR is 5:54 (training) and in a race setting I don't think I'd run sub 5:30, or even 5:40.
My ultimate/lifetime goal is a sub 3 marathon, I have no other desire in half/10k. Perhaps a sub 19 5k would be nice in short term.
Have I messed up due to lack of speedwork or miles? I'm fairly injury prone, but found that 7 day/wk works better then 5-6.
At most my weeks have been 50, many 40 mpw as in:
M - 3-4 @ 8:30-9:30
T - 6-8 fartlek (e.g. cutdowns, pyramids, 30/30...)
W - 3-4 @ 8:30-9:30
T - 8-10 progressive tempo run (e.g 9:00 down to 6:15)
F - 3 @ 9:00
S - 8 on trails (last two fast)
S - 10-12 @ 6:55 to 7:30
So do I go back to intensity and run fewer miles, or should I remove the "quality" and bump mileage to 60? I'm confused. I never really run "easy" distance as I keep my M/W/F short. Thanks for your help.
