Is there a tailwind sometimes?

Running straight on smooth pavement and not having to turn can be faster than a track at those paces, I'd imagine.

Maree was faster than Webb. He held the WR in the 1500 and AR in the 5K.

Yes, there is a tail wind sometimes [as there was today] and yes, it is net downhill, but even under optimal conditions, there's never been a result that's suggested the course is faster for elites than a track.

Plus the course has a net drop of about 30 feet.

Sydney Maree did hold the AR at 3'29"77 (faster than Alan Webb) it was only broken when Bernard Lagat ran 3'29"40 (he has since lowered it to the current AR of 3'29"30)

Also note that Maree once held the world record in the 1500m at 3'31"24

Maree was extremely accomplished runner, his at the 5th ave is nothing to sneeze at.

All true but if this is the real H McG, also all happened before you were born. Doesn't seem like the kind of thing you usually care about. Care to explain?

this makes the 4:16.68 on the women's side even more impressive--what would that be, something like #5 or 6 AT if run on a track?

It does also have an uphill from roughly quarter to half, so it is not like it is just an even, gradual downhill the whole way.

On the men's side, 3:47.5, from 1981 by Sydney Maree -- only one time ever run on 5th ave has come within a second of that.

The women's record is even more ridiculous, 4:16.68 by PattiSue Plumer in 1990 -- the next fastest time being 4:18.6.

Anyone know what Maree and Plumer could run for 1500s? Given Simpson today, it seems like Plumer would have threatened the AR / held the AR at some point, and Maree would have held the AR until Alan Webb days or thereabouts.

But jeeze, I just want to take a moment to appreciate how impressive those records, especially the women's record are.
