To everyone who's had a stress fracture, please can you advise me what to do!
I was running pretty well until May- averaging about 70-80km per week, then I got inflammation of the right ITB. So I was off the whole of June/July, didn't run at all and went to physio. It turned out my right hip/whole right side was chronically weak, and she advised me to do strengthening exercises and buy a foam roller, which I did. Anyway, in August, my leg felt fine, so I decided to come back to running and almost immediately increased my mileage back up to 50/60km a week. I also got accepted by a running coach in August, as I've decided I want to become serious about running. About 3/4 weeks ago, a nagging pain started in my right foot. I ignored it and it gradually got worse. It was one sharp spot on the top of my right foot, around the metatarsals. I immediately began to panic, but my coach said it was a collapsed arch, as I have flat feet. I did an xray, which showed nothing, then, as the pain was getting bad, I decided to do an MRI and it showed I probably have a stress fracture of the second metatarsal. I am really upset, as I was just getting fit again, and I was up to around 100km last week. My body feels great apart from my foot. I now need to do a CT scan to see how bad the stress fracture is.
So, my question is, how long will it take to heal? Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? What exercise can I do while I am resting? Will it heal completely? I am aiming for a sub 3 marathon next April and now I am worrying I will never run the same again.
(I should add I'm 26 years old, female, I have been running since I was 10 years old and never had problems until last year when I decided to start competing in half marathons and marathons.)
