After finally watching that Ray Rice video, several things crossed my mind. What are you supposed to do when your wife or girlfriend is attacking you?
Even if you outweigh them by 100 pounds what legally can you do to stop that, or are you not allowed to do anything?
If he slapped her do you think she think she would have stopped? No way that would have made her even angrier. He knew she would have hit him 10 times in three seconds.
I guess the law would say you can't react in a potentially lethal force unless you have a serious reason to believe that your very life is in danger.
I guess he could have put her in a bear hug and tried to reason with her. Or the most sensible thing to do was to take her abuse for the rest of the elevator ride. Then walk away and leave her and get his own room.
It wasn't like I thought initially, that he squared away and hauled off from an attacking stance. And it sure was no cheap sucker punch.
He made a fist, and she walked into a short jab with her face and her lights went out.
As far as Peterson, he took a branch in disciplining a child, the same way I'm sure he was disciplined as a boy. From the doctor's photos the punishment looked overly severe. There were some superficial lacerations. My grandfather did the same thing to me, less severe, when I was 5 and scratched his new car. Took a thin branch ( at least he didn't make me go get it) and whipped me about 15 times on the back of my leg. That was 1972. In the major scheme, both cases should be scrutinized by due process and what the law defines. In the long run, maybe the fact that these big money people, in the new age of media, behaving or reacting in ways like millions have for generations without being known or arrested, will go down as examples set to create real societal change.
But we all know that is BS. With the 24 hour news cycle and the internet there will always be media trying to drive stories and big money people breaking laws will always the number one seller.
That's why Ray Rice was terminated. Only until the NFL knew that the public saw that video did they rid themselves immediately of Rice. These aren't really legal decisions they are business decisions.
Petersen does need to be investigated, especially considering children being involved. I don't know if legally you are allowed to spank a kid on the buttocks any more? Maybe as long as there isn't a bruise.
