My child was in second place by a fair amount (50-100yrds?) as they were approaching the 3 mile mark, but the first place overall runner (and team member) was struggling at the very end. The runner in the lead ended up collapsing about 100 yards from the finish. My child wanted to help, but was unsure if 1) that was really the best move in case it actually was a serious issue (though it did not appear to be and turned out not to be), and 2) if one or both runners could end up getting DQ'd. So, my child, after slowing down and assessing and attempt to encourage decided to go on to win (3rd runner was only 10 seconds back, so there was not a lot of time to decide). After finishing, my child came back (without celebrating the victory, of course), but by that time other adults were there and were more helpful (and the teammate was up and walking around).
Questions:
1) What are the rules... could both (or one) be DQ'd for physically helping a team member get up and finish?
2) What are the commonly accepted societal expectations for the runner in my child's position? It seems that others (such as the coach and possibly the other runner's parents) are upset with my child and believe that (s)he should have responded differently (but are not explicitly saying so... for example, neither the coach or assistant coach said one word to her about it).
