I'm an avid reader... some people think I'm pretentious if I ever mention a book I read.

People, on the whole, are declining in the amount of time spent reading, and declining in intelligence level. It's quite sad.

Society has never valued the degree more and what it contains less than today.

I frequently share things that I've read with people. As long as I do it in a non-douchey way, they appreciate it.

Plenty of people discuss books without ever being accused of being pretentious. If you find that a lot of people think you're being pretentious, you probably are being pretentious. The way that people react is probably due to the way that you discuss your reading rather than just the mere fact that you mention your reading.

I'm not saying it happens all the time, just that it has happened on more than one occasion. Most people I talk to, especially my friends, enjoy it.

The problem only arises when you actually try to interact and converse with other humans. Take a leaf out of my book (pun intended) and become a basement dwelling hermit.

It really depends on the book you are mentioning.

The people who seem to most often get incensed by mentioning reading are people who have a lot of education but aren't well-read outside their little bailiwick.

So talking about them comes across as pretentious just as speaking latin or discussing classical music does.

if you were humble and had tact people wouldn't ridicule you. You're a douche and not just that but it sounds like you're dense too. What you have is a case of multiple parties agreeing that your contributions to dialogue are either both or individually irrelevant and grandiose. Being an isolated incident your situation might be chalked up to a negative response from some female dolt, But, because there seems to be a consensus among the rabble in accordance with you're narrow minded ex girlfriend i would say you may want to scrutinize your delivery with a little more deference to universally accepted standards of propriety.

I am now recalling a thread quite a while back where you, Bad Wigins, argued vehemently that books are bad and people should not read. That post really explained a lot about you and the stuff you write on this board.

Bad Wigins there is no difference between uniform and pointwise continuity. Infinitesimal differences are just that, infinitesimal.

You might know that if you visited the library where there are still primitives reading books. And learning.
