Imagine that Canada and the US are lumped together in some United North America thing. Canada feels subservient, and wishes to interact with the world as Canada, not as UNA.
A large part of it is that England is too right wing for Scotland.
'Cos they're f*cking idiots that's why... Ask them how they will support themselves when they go independent:
response: We have OIL!
Well, you will run out of oil at some point. What then?

Alex Salmond is a disease in British politics. I'd like him to get personal independence and f*ck off for good. He can go, Scotland can stay.
They've seen "Braveheart" too often
These people aren't just stupid nationalists. I'm sure they've thought it through. If they can afford the change go for it.
Splitting while still retaining the UK's currency is asking for trouble, as Krugman wrote in the Times. That means that they cannot enact the economic policies necessary to deal with recessions>putting them in the position of countries like Spain and Greece. Krugman compared Spain to Florida, two places with huge housing booms and busts: in Spain, there was drastic austerity imposed by the European overlords (Germany), which prompted worse than Great Depression conditions, whereas in Florida, the U.S. gov't provided massive aid and within a few years, Florida's unemployment rate had gone way down.
There are also rumors Catalonia and Basque are having problems in Spain and Catolina may want to secede from Spain.
Also rumors of problems with Flemings and Walloonians in Belgium.
And in California there are talks of splitting the state up to 7 ways.
Actually california to 6 states, I dont know how this would work as most of the taxpayers are in Los angeles, and it would be hard for the 5 new states that Los Angeles is NOT in, without the strong tax base Los Angeles has to carry them as it has been doing for decades.

And with the water and other vital resources Los Angeles hasn't.
The Belgian split would actually happen if not for Brussels being in the Flemish region
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
