MIDDLETOWN — Frank Shorter finally learned the source of most of his leg and foot injuries the past decade. His left hip. X-rays revealed the hip totally arthritic. So Shorter went in for what he amusingly referred to on Sunday as a "160,000-mile maintenance.'' He had hip resurfacing surgery, a procedure less invasive than the total hip replacement. That was only six months ago. And so Shorter, who grew up in Middletown, ran the Rowley 5K instead of the 10K at The Classic. Speaking to the field before the 5K, Shorter told them he had only one request when runners passed him. "As long as you tell me I'm looking good.''
Shorter clocked 34:29, 178th place out of 316 finishers, and made it to the 10K starting line in time for a pre-race speech.
