Why host a Men's 6k with 6 weeks to the conference meet? That distance is for August. No wonder why Texas A & M will never be as good as Texas in distance running.

lots of colleges are hosting meets with 5 and 6ks for men now, sometimes even shorter distances. Most of these colleges are d1, where you'd think athletes have the endurance to race 8k. I don't get it.
It's more of a way to get guys in the racing mind set while not having as much stress on the body. Lots of these guys do their heaviest training in September/early october so 5ks don't impact them later in the week for important workouts.
My team doesn't have our first 8k until late September.

This makes a lot of sense, and the question seems to be of someone with little imagination or insight. In general, a lot of coaches want their athletes to run shorter, faster races (e.g., a 5000 for a 10,000 track guy); Schumacher does this often.
Here it allows them to race at a bit of a faster tempo without the damage and with slightly less need to back off before and after the race.

You wanna know what's funny Hook Em'? Your beloved longhorns are running the UTSA Ricardo Romo Classic on September 19th (A&M's meet is on Sep 20th). You wanna know what the distance of that race is?
5k
So step off the soap box, cause Herbster is doing the exact same thing.
That is for non varsity runners. We run at Griak the following week. That 5:30 to 6:30 minute difference is reason you host a 6k over 8k?! The preference is to run several races at the distance for conference. This is more conducive when jumping to 10k at the Regional Meet.

So does A&M...
That is the reason.
Just making sure I have this straight...
Texas is running a 5k in Texas and then a week later an 8k in Minnesota
A&M is running a 6k in Texas and then a week later an 8k in Minnesota
And your argument is that A&M doesn't know what they are doing and isn't running enough but Texas is doing it the right way and running longer distances to prepare for regionals? Did I get that all right?

Late September in College Station is hotter than August in most parts of the North. Highs in the low 90s, lows in the mid 70s unless you get lucky with an early cold front.
There's honestly nobody on UT's squad who gives a $hit what A&M does. Hook'Em Horns is an Aggie troll

Most D1 athletes probably have the endurance to race a half marathon.
Doesn't mean they should.
A lot of programs will run 2 early season races, Pre-Nationals, a Conference meet, the Regionals, and then Nationals. If these six races are all 8K or 10K, then that's a lot of racing. No wonder the NCAA meet is often a place where some good runners fall apart. They are raced out. The running of 5K and 6K races early in the year is sensible.

raced out? It takes maybe a couple days to recover from these things. The athletes are working out again by mid week if not monday or tuesday. Whats even the point of running xc, if not to race. Most runners won't even compete at nats, over half won't compete at regionals. I can understand saving some top runners to be fresh for regionals or nats, but the rest should be racing all out the 4 or 5 meets they get to run.
