Normally the US Army has the draft and takes several million people.
Just nuke 'em before they nuke us.
No reason to put a single US serviceman or woman into harm's way.
Nice job with that Apology Tour there Big O.
Enjoy your Nobel Prize.
The law should mandate:
Min 16 yo for high school dropouts.
Min 18 yo for everyone else.
No college deferments.
No Mormom mission.
No conscientious objectors.
UN/US must register international choice of services with the Selective Service Commission:
1) US Army
2) CIA
3) Israel IDF
4) ISIL/IS/ISIS
5) Quds Force
6) Hamas
7) Islamic Jihad
8) Al-Shabad
9) Republican Guards
10) Hezbollah
11) Alawite Army
12) Kurdistan Army
13) Russian Army
14) Ukranian Army
more choices per UN/US registration...
anyone else see the irony is a person with the screen name "Freedom of Choice" wanting a DRAFT?
A draft is a huge waste of time and resources. Today's military is far more technical than WWII when basically all a soldier had to know was how to fire a gun and a few basics. These days there is specialization. So by the time you trained someone, he/she would be out. They are not going to re-enlist so you spent a lot of money training someone that will never work for you. Bad idea.
You coward. It's the American Grunts who has saved the world numerous times. Not the truck drivers, IT geeks, pilots, and Pentagon generals.
But actually a draft would reduce a bunch of crime and create an entire generation of baby boomers. Maybe even help lower the US debt? The draft would rid the streets of hoodlums and gangbangers who dont work or contribute to society. It would actually stir up the economy because these people are getting paid and benefits. When they finish they want to settle, have kids and buy homes. Not to mention, strengthen and increase our forces. So we'd all win.

BTW, the Coast Guard is not part of the Defense Dept, it is now under Homeland Security
Also USMC is part of the Navy

US Coast Guard cutters are deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of the regular DoD miltary prescence. US Marines are not a part of the regular DoD. The Founding Fathers created the US Marines as a separate force. Under Congressional law US Marines are used under extreme circumstances.

No, The Marines are part of the Navy.
Here is the seal. Notice DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY at the top.
http://bgi1.com/clients/military/marine-corps/marines-logo-2/The Marines are for anytime, anywhere, deployed from Navy ships. Amphibious warfare is their specialty, doing the brunt of beach head assaults, they are first in, since they're a quickly deployable force. The Marines & Navy just pull up with their ships, and start pounding while the Army / Air Force come in later to do the big assault.
They're not a specialized force used under "extreme" circumstances. Go read a book.
From the movies and books I read US Marines are for the most vicious, desperate, and risky jobs requiring hand-to-hand fighting, knives, shotguns, parachutes, diving underwater, etc. whether small or large outfits. US Marines are best for surprise missions, secret night drops, small unit targeted assasinations of enemy commanders, missions that have to be done on a few minutes notice with no planning. Blowing up underground tunnels, undersea cables, nuclear misslies, destroying enemy command posts, that sort of stuff. Very high casulaties are always expected each time US Marines are assigned and the US public knows that and can only pray and pray. The main assault in the 2nd Iraq War was done by the US Marines. Just in stateside training alone, US Marines suffer more deaths and maimed soldiers than the rest of the Pentagon combined even though the headcount for Marines are only 10% of the US Armed Forces. US Marine sergeants and officers are especially the stuff of legend. US Marines that earn higher rank are especially crazy characters. I.E. the higher the rank, the crazier and nuttier the Marine, vs the standard US military where higher ranks increasing show more professionalism and wisdom, and are more laid back.
Add women to the mix. Much better at saving the world than men.
Dear Dick Chaney ;-)
This is old think.
We don't need large armies and navies to save the World.
Have a smaller highly trained and well paid volunteer army. No draft.
Supplement with mercenaries.
Use technology to supplement. Drones, satellites, missiles.
Even the navy is going this way. No more battleships and damn few cruisers. Instead Carrier task forces with frigates, destroyers.
Subs...subs...subs.
Big ground wars don't work anymore or haven't we been paying attention to what happened in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
