I've eaten mangosteen many times in Thailand. It is purplish on the outside, about the size of a plum, and when you open the peel there are little white sections that are kind of mushy and very sweet. It's very good. If you can find some good ones in an Asian market, give it a try.
They are incredibly delicious.However, you are unlikely to find a "good" one in an asian market here in the US. They do not travel well. Many fruits can be picked green and flown in a durable state around the world where they ripen at their destination. Not so for the mangosteen. You'll have to fly to Asia to get a truly great one.

Currently they are being grown in Puerto Rico along with other fruits I've never heard of like
kwai muk, quenip, rambutan, pulasan, abiu, 2xdurian, guarana, huerenia umbricata, madrono, acharachu, langstat, rollinia deliciosa, marang, kwai muk, eugenia victoriana and a few others.
Mangosteens are in season July into December I'm told so the shipping should be no problem.
Hawaii also produces a crop but that makes for very expensive fruit instead of PRs expensive fruit.
I do not know the figures but I doubt this is a very big market as % of PR's agricultural exports.
If you haven't done so, try the rambutan. I like it much better than the mangosteen. It's a funny looking fruit that some people call a "hairy eyeball." The white fruit inside is wonderful. Also, if you can find it, try the dragonfruit. They come with white or purple fruit with tiny, very soft and edible seeds. The purple ones make your lips and mouth purple, but that's the only difference I've noticed. Man, I miss Southeast Asia, but we're going again soon!
