I've reached a serious plateau in my half marathon times and looking for suggestions on how to bust it. Early last year I ran 1:22 during marathon training, on a very fast course. Since then, my mileage is slightly lower, 60's compared to 70's, but my workouts are much faster at the same effort and I can't even break 1:23 anymore. Here are some recent workouts:
- 3x2 miles T with 2 minute rests, then 4x200 Reps with 200 jog. Paces: T: 6:05, 6:02, 5:56, R: 5:02, 4:47, 5:05, 5:04
- 4 minutes hard, 3 rest. Paces: 5:36, 5:25, 5:40, 5:5:30, 5:44, 5:27
I am not going crazy on these workouts, I can run 6:00 flat for tempos at a comfortable effort, which according to most calculators should put me around 1:20, but I can't maintain sub 6:20 pace for a full half anymore. In recent 1:23 races, the first half has felt very easy at 1:21 pace, then I've suddenly bombed the second half. Mainly breathing problems, with some stitches. Mentally, I just seem to give in and slog it to the end, it never used to be like that. Have lost confidence in my racing ability
My gut tells me I need to work on more longer runs interspersed with Marathon pace or tempo pace efforts, and basically try to simulate the stresses during the second half of a half marathon. Go back to more Marathon-style training basically. Feels like mile/2 mile tempos and 1200 repeats are doing nothing for me anymore.
I have another half in 10 weeks, but considering pulling out and trying to get back to basics over winter, solid mileage, and trying again next year. My goal is sub 1:20.
Any suggestions?
