I was a fairly decent runner in high school, and am now a freshman at a college with a middle of the road D1 team. I am not extremely far away from being good enough to get on the varsity team, but probably need to step it up a level or two. I think the best way for me to do that is to boost mileage, since I was a fairly low mileage guy in high school (40-50 was really my peak). However, my question is by how much? I didn't run that much during the summer for a variety of reasons, so my plan is to build a base now and start racing during the indoor track season. For now I will raise my mileage at a consistent rate (5-10 mpw), but is there a specific mileage where I should stop? 70 miles? 80 miles? I am just wondering if there is a specific point that would be too much of an increase given that I have never ran that much in a week previously.
