No, this is not proof that Americans work too much. It is proof that this one particular American worked too much. That's it.
I work a lot and I like it. Wouldn't have it any other way. I'd be bored if I took a vacation.

You're correct that vacations and retirements are fairly recent constructs but so is work. Hunter/gatherers typically "work" 2-3 hours a day and given that throughout history most humans were hunter/gatherers they had tremendous amounts of free time.
