Went to college for about a year. By far the worst yeay of my life and the biggest mistake I've ever made.
Graduated in may 2008 from a top-25 school. Had been applying to real jobs all along. Had been working various jobs all through college.
Got hardly any interviews. Suddenly it was June. I had $850 and owed $800 for rent for the remainder of the summer. I knew I was about to fall on hard times so I paid off my rent in advance.
That was a very difficult summer. I was constantly up and down. Interviewers wanted to take their time deciding. I needed money NOW. Felt trapped. Refreshed email probably 1500 times per day. Once went 10 days without a decent meal. Never panhandled or asked for anything. Often times I resorted to finding change by vending machines and in couch cushions.
$.53 day old bread from Jimmy John's never tasted so good. It was a treat to get that. When you are that low all you think about is food and money.
Someone who graduated from a top-25 school should be resourceful enough to earn enough money to eat decent meals every day, even without a stable job.
New Orleans
I had just turned 40 and was in great running shape for me. Signed up for the Houston half marathon where I was going for 1:16. Two days after my birthday, I had an accident at work and tore my back up. I had already planned a week in Florida before heading to Houston so I went anyway because I couldn't work. I went to the see the French Quarter in New Orleans and could not walk a block without having to sit on the curb for 10 minutes until the pain subsided enough to go a little farther. I wasn't going to be setting any PR's for a while.
Went on to Florida where I attempted a 5k. I passed a lady pushing a stroller the last mile so I didn't end up DFL. I crossed the line around 56 minutes. After figuring out it would take me around 4 hours to do the half marathon at that pace, I decided not to run.

I think my biggest mistake during that time was not pursuing more part time jobs. It's not like I couldn't get a job at a coffee shop or pizza parlor it's that I was getting interviews with real jobs but not landing them. I was constantly in the mindset that I was going to get a job. Eventually I did. But there was a 2-month period where I was hurting.
When you're an undergrad where I'm from, it's easier to get a free beer than it is a free meal.
The other problem is that my state was hit hard by the recession. Many of my friends landed good jobs out of state. I never even applied out of state because I had no means to get there. Literally, I was trapped financially, couldn't get out and fell into a depression. Its easy to say, "oh you're smart, you could've taken a temp job". Again, it was such a low point that I couldn't concentrate on much else.
Didn't you ever think to consider day to day work? I was in a similar position as you once and I used to go down to Home Depot and hang out with the immigrants looking for day work twice a week. I'd always land a job because I speak English and Spanish fluently, which was an advantage, but when I was hungry, I wasn't too proud to work any job for food money. There are always odd jobs to make money.
I'm still disabled. I can walk without any assistance but very slow. My brain just can't make my legs and muscles move quicker. I was much worse 5 years ago. My physical therapist says in two years I should be able to appear normal.
First year of college: my gf broke up with me, I wreaked a car, and I flunked all my classes.
