D1= large state school
D2= Middle of nowhere, smaller size, poor academics, not quite good enough to be D1
D3= private, small, academic focused, mostly rich kids who can afford to play sports without scholarships

In general, there are way more rich kids at D1 schools (and yes I'm talking percentages here)
Some D3 schools are known for a privileged student body, but take any random D3 school in the Midwest or south and you'll see why I mean.
D1 schools are not all state schools. Examples: Baylor, American, Wake Forest, Tulane.
Plenty of D2 schools have good academics. Examples: Colorado school of Mines, Stonehill, Assumption.
Plenty of D3 schools aren't that good. Heck, there's a whole thread about it on this website:

But, if breaking complicated things down into very broad generic categories makes life easier for you, yeah, just keep using stereotypes. Don't forget that the irish are drunks, middle-easterners are terrorists, and the asians are good at math.

So true.

I agree. Especially the part about A-Rabs.
The state school I went to was D3
I think most state schools are D3.
No, it is not mostly right.
State schools that are not the main state university often tend to be D3

BYU
I think the majority of terrorists come from non-Arab dominated countries, like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Sudan, Philippines, Nigeria, India, Sri Lanka, Spain, Indonesia, Thailand, the UK, Ireland, the US etc.
UCSD is D2 but doesn't follow the stereotype. La Jolla isn't in the middle of no where, there are about 30k students, and academics are solid.

No.

Lol solid based on what?
D3 = nursery where parents can drop off their babies for four years

Yes it's mostly right, obviously there are going to be a few exceptions like any stereotype. Like there are a lot of small private expensive D1 schools and some crappy D3 schools.
I would say that you're on the right track as far as athletics go, but way off on the academics part.

Problem with the D1 stereotype is:
- the Ivies. Not state schools. All D1.
- good to great academic schools that are D1 and not state schools. Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame, Vandy, Georgetown, Boston College, Northwestern, Rice, USC, Wake. Just look at college rankings. D1 > D3.
So, by #'s you're probably right that most D1 schools are state schools. But by quality, the stereotype falls apart.

I'm looking at some college rankings
http://www.forbes.com/top-colleges/list/1 D3 Williams College
2 D1 Stanford
3 D3 Swarthmore
4 D1 Princeton
5 D3 MIT
6 D1 Yale
7 D1 Harvard
8 D3 Pamona
9 D1 US military academy
10 D3 Amherst College
11 D3 Haverford
12 D1 UPenn
13 D1 Brown
14 D3 Bowdoin
By XC scoring D3 wins 27 to 28. D3 gets a strong start and suffers a bit against D1's strong 5th man.
True, but take into account that most people haven't heard of at least 4 of the D3 schools on the list. I'd rather have Purdue, Notre Dame, Northwestern or Penn State on a resume than Pamona,Browdoin, Haverford... I'm not talking about the guy who got a job right out of college because of his internship either. I'm talking about the guy who is recently unemployed looking for work. Perception is reality and people have heard of D1 schools and most people think ND and company are good academic institutions.
