I say: Olympic Gold!
I say: Olympic Gold!
Even though most countries in the world do not award medals at all to soldiers, there are still millions of purple hearts issued each year mainly to Europeans and Americans.

Please amplify and illuminate your comment.
Why does getting wounded warrant a reward. One would think not getting wounded should be rewarded.
which brings us to the question:
Who makes all these medals?
Do the make ribbons too?
Olympic Medal.
There is only one way to win one.
What if I pilot drones deployed in Iraq remotely from an Air Forces base in Nebraska. Don't I deserve a Congressional Medal of Honor too.
Olympic medal - not even close
oly gold > purple heart
but
congressional medal of honor > oly gold
I don't know, getting a price for killing people you don't know solely because your slave master says so seems pretty rad but I'm going to go with the Olympic gold.

Most definitely. I'd even add the service crosses above olympic gold.
The Purple Heart is a recognition for being wounded in combat. It doesn't require specific acts of heroism.

Exactly. And many more COULD have been given out. However, some former soldiers will tell you that some recipients of the medal were a real joke and a crime. For instance, there are many cases where a soldier tripped or fell during a conflict, maybe over his/her own feet, and ended up getting hurt. The battle ensues, and afterward, the sergeant asks if anyone was hurt. Rather than admit they fell, they raise their hand. Some snicker and shake their head, but the low life figures that he can go home with a purple heart and brag. My dad gave his away. He said the captain didn't give to some guys simply because he didn't like them. Imagine what you will. But, the short answer is, yes, millions Order of the Purple Heart have been awarded, but not nearly as many gold medals have been handed out.

In anticipation of massive casualties in the event of an invasion of Japan near the end of WWII, so many Purple Heart medals were manufactured that there were still 120,000 left from that lot as of 2003. Some are manufactured today to replenish stock. The manufacturer is Graco Awards.

Olympic gold is a reward for success.
PH is a 'reward' for failure. Wait a minute. Maybe one of you jarheads will claim that getting injured is, in fact, the goal in combat. Then I guess it is a success.

Nope. First place (clean) is all it takes.
I think it's a very odd American custom to publicize soldiers and police in such a manner as witnessed: speech, extra money, paper diploma, and medallion.
Oly gold is far less deplorable, at least if honestly won.
John Kerry has a Purple Heart. His purported war injury required a single bandaid.

You are close. As someone who has been through ROTC training, I can tell you from our military history classes that the Marines had during the Vietnam war an acceptable 40% casualty rate for each conflict. Must of really suuucked to be a private in that war. We even had a former Marine officer address the class one day, and showed us his old hand drawings of battle plans, with arrows, etc for out flanking the enemy. And, he told us about how 500 or 600 of 3000 would be killed, and the senior officers would shake hands and congratulate each other in private and then act grief stricken around the troops.
the marines in every country are designed for the 16-19 year old, pre-adult, thug mentality.
Genocide of civilians by US soldiers isn't a cool thing to do.
