This week, I increased mileage quite a bit (such that my highest mileage from last month I did in 4.5 days this week). This seemed all well and good since nothing hurt through most of it and I felt pretty energetic on the old mileage. I did feel dead tired all week though. Anyway, late in the week (Friday) my foot started to hurt a bit when I was playing ultimate frisbee. I finished the game I was in, and it hurt to walk. I poked around my foot and found it hurt like hell to press on a particular spot on my 5th metatarsal (for my smallest toe).
I took yesterday off, during which it got a smidgen better. It didn't hurt to walk as of midday, and it doesn't hurt when I trot back and forth in the hall or jump or anything. However, it still hurts very much to press on this particular spot (on the metatarsal close to my toe). I have had stress fractures before as recently as last year, but not in this particular metatarsal. I typically use the rule of thumb "If it doesn't hurt to walk, you can run" but have paid the price in long-term injuries before. Anyway so the question is, do I wait for it not to hurt so much to press on in case it's a stress reaction/fracture etc., or gamble that it's unrelated to those, and run and wait for that to go away?
TL;DR: would it be wise to run as long as it doesn't hurt to walk but it hurts a bloody ton to press on a particular part of my foot, or not?
Thanks for your time.
