People have all levels of belief in God, and even when someone thanks "the almighty", that doesn't necessarily mean that they believe God actively and directly cured them.
I personally am moving toward a more agnostic view, hopeful that there is something pleasant after this life, but for sure not knowing (I actually never did "know"), and I DO see the horribleness that religion has caused in the world. BUT, I also see the GOOD that it causes. It was almost assuredly this doctor's religious beliefs that led him to go try to help people in Africa to begin with. We NEED those actions in this world. If his beliefs lead him to do that, then more power to him.
