You have potential. So do a lot of HS frosh.
If you want to take running seriously, know these things:
1. run year round. You can't be a D1 recruit if you run XC in the fall and play baseball in the spring.
2. college recruiting is all about jr yr outdoor track (not XC). Here's a decent link re: standards (http://www.athleticscholarships.net/trackandfieldscholarships.htm). In short, you'll want to be sub-4:20 and sub-9:30 as a jr to get a sniff from d1 schools. Faster is obviously better (and required for the top programs).
3. take control of your training. a lot of HS distance coaches suck. if you're at a hs known for distance running, congratulations. you're in the minority. i'd recommend jack daniels' book. or steve magness. read them. seek help if your coach's training is non-existent or radically different than what's outlined in these books.
3a. do supplemental work. get strong so you can run fast and stay healthy. read jay johnson's blog and workout routines. more important, do them. (listen to this to understand the connection between strength and speed:

)
4. ignore the immature posters on this board. (I was surprised it took so long for them to assume you were a girl. that usually happens within 10 nanoseconds of a post like yours.)
if you do all of this and have talent (it's unclear that you do, even though you ran mid-5:00s in 8th grade), you should make it to the next level.
after that, it's in god's hands...
good luck!
