So I competed in track and field at a decent level in speed/power (10.6, 47.8) but haven't competed in 5 years.
Recently I have been getting into distance running. Nothing big at all and pathetic by your standards (for the last 2 months i've been running 2-4x per week tempo 5-10k)
The other day I go out to the track with my buddy who I can only term as your typical couch potato. He would actually have a runners build if he worked out but is a classic example of "skinny-fat" (ie. has a nice little beer gut and skinny upper body)
He says he runs occasionally but like super slow 20-40min runs around the block very seldom.
Anyway we ran a mile and he ripped off 6:17. I figured this was outstanding for an average dude (not even a weekend warrior, he hasn't played sports since HS and is 32) He also drinks beer regularly and eats like crap.
He likes running and I was saying I would train / help him out but I know little about distance. Does he actually have potential or could any joe shmo head to the track and run 6:17? I know that is incredibly slow for you guys.
