Although distance runners aren't known for having really jacked looking cores, they are known for having strong and toned looking cores. I'm a D1 XC runner and do a huge amount of core exercises and other exercises that could indirectly strengthen the core, yet my core looks softer than pretty much every guy on my team's abs. I'm very skinny (5'9" and about 130 pounds) and so I don't look fat in the least but my core looks shockingly weak and feels weak when I run, too. I do a lot of core every day (maybe 20 minutes) and have upped it to maybe 30-35 minutes per day this summer because I have much more free time, yet I've never noticed any additional core strength from doing more exercises. My question is, is it possible to get a stronger core or is it not something I can help? Can some distance runners not get that strong of abs due to high mileage (I run about 100 miles per week in the summer), or is it just me? Do people have specific core exercises that have worked wonders for them and done way more for them than any other exercises? Input is greatly appreciated.
