Are other people seeing more 1M road races around nowadays? I'm talking legit, timed, open races - not the ubiquitous "tot trot"/"stroller dash"/what-have-you before your local 5K or HM, but also not invitational races for pros.
I'm wondering if there are starting to be enough road miles around for a recreational (but age-group competitive) 5K adult runner to justify focusing one's training on that distance instead of 5K. I live in Illinois and I bet that there was/is at least 1 decent road race mile for every month of this racing season within reasonable driving distance. I highly doubt this was the case 20, 10, or even 5 years ago - can anyone back me up on this (or shoot it down)?
Is the 1M road race here to stay? Or will its logistical limitations and niche appeal result in its eventual extinction?
