USATF mourns the loss of Torrin Lawrence
7/28/2014
INDIANAPOLIS -- USA Track & Field mourns the loss of Torrin Lawrence, who died early Monday morning in a car accident.
A Jacksonville, Fla. native, Lawrence represented Team USA at both the inaugural IAAF World Relays in 2014 and USA vs. The World in 2013. Lawrence was a multi-time NCAA and SEC Champion at the University of Georgia where he remains the only track athlete in program history to win an individual NCAA title.
“We were devastated to learn of Torrin's passing early this morning,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and everyone who knew him. Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply.”
Lawrence graduated from UGA with a degree in Sociology in May 2013. Lawrence was a member of Team USA at the inaugural IAAF World Relays in 2014, competing on the men’s 4x400 relay. The American foursome finished in 3:01.09 in the prelims with Lawrence handling third leg duties.
Lawrence competed at USA vs. The World in 2013 as a member of the winning 4x400 relay team, running an impressive opening leg to hold off the Jamaicans in 3:00.91. Just two weeks ago, Lawrence ran a lifetime best outdoors at the Kortrijk Guldensporenmeeting in Belgium, turning in a time of 45.32. He posted three 400 wins on the 2014 season, including the Tom Jones Memorial Classic over Olympic medalists Tony McQuay and Kerron Clement.
Memorial arrangements will be announced in the near future.

This is sad to hear, especially somebody in the prime of their career.
Gosh so sad.....
rip in peace
This is so sad. Were charges filed against the truck driver? The car must have had a mechanical failure and not just a flat or it would have been on the shoulder.
I'm wondering the same thing...the truck driver had to have messed up and caused this issue because it sounds like he was on the shoulder of the road. RIP Torrin.

It was 1:45 am and his car was in the middle lane of the highway. I highly doubt charges would be filed.
You're a trucker, it's late at night and you see a car in the middle of the highway. Hitting that car with Torrin in it isn't a criminal act nor is swerving to avoid a car and hitting a pedestrian on the shoulder.
Why do Americans always look for someone to blame? It's a tragedy.
He wasn't in the car. He was on the shoulder and the trucker hit the car which struck Torrrin. This why I stated the car must have had mechanical problems bc if it was just a tire I would hope ihe could have got it off the road. Regardless a tragedy.

Article I read says car was in middle of 3 lanes. Lawrence was standing in front of car, on cell phone with Mom, when truck stuck his car (and him).
